My Artist Statement

Andy Warhol thought that photography was going to be the next medium to explode. He was right, to a degree. With photography being so accessible a medium, consumerism has polluted it as an art form.

One glossy magazine after the next has been born, each jam-packed with suggestive photographs creaming in our faces in order to get a product, brand or service noticed. These dollar sign stained pages are so airbrushed and manipulated that it’s hard to remember what they are truly meant to do – sell things.

When we remove what’s being advertised from the page, what are we left with? Fashion bibles full of lascivious poses that incite emotion without an object. Without something for feelings to attach to, the desire is directionless.

These paintings are intended to emit unrequited lust and cause tension – images that callously cause a sense of yearning. When done on a large scale without all the surreal fashion realism of airbrushing, what are we left with? It’s confusion and frustration, but beauty.

Consider this an attempt to turn the saturation of photography’s commercialism on its head. Perhaps we can remember what photogrpahy was like as an artistic expression before it became synonymous with pop culture. Maybe we can look at these images and see through the digital manipulation of dewy skin and moist lips. This is one medium promoting another, taking everyday imagery and turning it into something new again. Maybe even bringing it back to life.
